Yemen unrest: Further deaths in clashes in Sanaa

More civilians have died in political unrest in Yemen's capital Sanaa, a day after 26 people were shot dead at a rally in the city.

Witnesses said security forces once again opened fire on protesters, who had promised to carry on their campaign to oust President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Reports said at least two people had been killed in the latest violence.

The government denied carrying out Sunday's killings, blaming Islamist groups for firing on the rally.

But witnesses and protesters dismissed the government's account.

For months, thousands of people have been waging a campaign to depose Mr Saleh, who is currently in Saudi Arabia recovering from a bomb attack in June.

Witnesses said a firefight had broken out between government troops and soldiers loyal to the protesters.

Tom Finn, a freelance reporter in Sanaa, said on Twitter that injured people were arriving at a makeshift hospital "by the dozen", most of them with gunshot wounds to the legs.

Reuters news agency reported that one of those who died on Monday was a child who was unconnected with the protesters.

The boy's father told the agency: "I stepped out to get some food and left my two boys in the car and I heard the older one scream. The little one was shot straight through the head."

The AFP news agency reported that violence had broken out in several areas of the city, with snipers on rooftops opening fire on the main protester encampment.
